Avalanche sign Adam Scheel to one-year contract

The Colorado Avalanche announced Tuesday that the club has signed goaltender Adam Scheel for the balance of the 2024-25 season. Per PuckPedia, the two-way contract will carry a $775,000 annual average value prorated.

Scheel joins the Avalanche after splitting time this season with the club’s AHL and ECHL affiliates. With the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, Scheel has made 11 appearances in which he has posted an 8-1-2 record alongside a .911 save percentage, 2.61 goals-against average, and two shutouts. Scheel has also seen 18 showings with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies with whom he has went 5-11-2 with an .883 save percentage and 3.97 goals-against average.

In all, through part of five seasons and 98 total appearances in the AHL, Scheel stands 36-36-22 with a .905 save percentage, 2.91 goals-against average, and four shutouts. Scheel has also seen success at the ECHL level, underscored by the 2022-23 campaign when he led all goaltenders with a .932 save percentage and 1.97 goals-against average to earn a spot on the ECHL Second All-Star Team at season’s end.

A 25-year-old native of Lakewood, Ohio, Scheel spent three campaigns with the NCAA’s North Dakota Fighting Hawks from 2018-21, highlighted by his final season when he was recognized as the Goaltender of the Year after he went 20-4-1 with a .931 save percentage, 1.74 goals-against average, and four shutouts en route to an NCHC championship.

In 2021, Scheel signed with the Dallas Stars as an undrafted free agent.

In joining the Avalanche, Scheel provides valuable depth between the pipes behind NHL netminders Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood as well as Trent Miner and Kevin Mandolese with the Eagles. On the season, the Avalanche stand 35-24-2 to hold down the first wildcard seed in the Western Conference with 72 points. The Avalanche have qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
