Avalanche’s Cale Makar becomes fastest active defenseman to hit 100 goals
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar reached the 100-goal plateau this afternoon after he notched his 14th goal of the season against the Dallas Stars to tie the game at 2-2.
Makar becomes the fastest active defenseman in the National Hockey League to hit that mark. In the NHL’s history, Makar becomes the sixth-fastest defenseman in the NHL to reach the mark behind Hall of Famers George Boucher, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque and Denis Potvin.

Makar currently leads all defensemen in points with 14 goals and 37 assists for 51 points in 47 games this season. Makar notched 14 points in 13 December games and had his second two-goal game of the season in a 6-5 comeback win against the Buffalo Sabres on Jan 2.
Daily Faceoff’s mid-season awards have Makar as one of the finalists for the Norris Trophy for the 2024-25 campaign.
The Calgary, Alberta native was named the NHL’s First Star of the Month for October, when he had 19 points in 11 games to become the second defenseman in NHL history with a season-opening point streak of at least 11 games.
Last season, Makar became the second-fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach 300 career points. Makar accomplished the feat in 280 career games, just one shy of Bobby Orr.
In 362 career regular season games, Makar has racked up 100 goals and 287 assists for 387 points. Makar has also tallied 80 points in 72 postseason games, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy when the Avs won the Stanley Cup in 2022.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft spent two seasons dominating NCAA hockey with UMass-Amherst, where he finished with 16 goals and 33 assists for 49 points in 41 games, winning the Hobey Baker Award for the best player in the country during the 2018-19 campaign.
