Blue Jackets place Sean Monahan on injured reserve; Owen Sillinger called up
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Thursday that center Sean Monahan has been placed on the injured reserve with an upper-body ailment. In a corresponding roster move, left winger Owen Sillinger has been recalled from the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters on an emergency basis.
Monahan suffered the upper-body injury Tuesday versus the Pittsburgh Penguins, leaving early in the third period. On the season, Monahan is one of three Blue Jackets skaters with point-per-game production, tallying 14 goals and 27 assists through 41 appearances. The 30-year-old Brampton, Ont., native is in his first season with Columbus after inking a five-year, $5.5-million per season pact with the club in unrestricted free agency, per PuckPedia.
A veteran of 805 NHL games, Monahan’s career has counted stops with the Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, and Blue Jackets, in which he has registered 258 goals with 321 assists for 579 points. Monahan was originally chosen sixth overall by the Flames in the 2013 NHL Draft.
For Sillinger, the 27-year-old product of Regina, Sask., joins the Blue Jackets following 34 showings with the Monsters this season in which he has recorded eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points to rank fourth in team scoring. In all, Sillinger has spent four seasons with Cleveland, amassing 33 goals and 77 assists for 110 points through 192 career contests.
A graduate of the NCAA’s Bemidji State Beavers, Sillinger signed with the Blue Jackets in August as an undrafted free agent. Per PuckPedia, Sillinger carries a $775,000 annual average value and can become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign.
In joining the Blue Jackets, Sillinger links up with a club in the midst of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, as Columbus is currently holding down the second wildcard position with an 18-17-6 record and 42 points.
