Columbus Blue Jackets sign Trey Fix-Wolansky to two-year extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Trey Fix-Wolansky to a two-year, two-way contract extension. FIx-Wolansky was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.
The 24-year-old played nine NHL games with the Blue Jackets this past season, scoring once against Philadelphia on April 11. Wolansky had 29 goals and 71 points with the Cleveland Monsters, 32 points ahead of teammate Justin Richards for first in team scoring.
Fix-Wolansky has two goals and three points in 15 games with the Blue Jackets over the past two years. Drafted with the 204th pick in 2018, Fix-Wolansky is a solid depth piece for the Blue Jackets.
The 5-foot-7 brings speed and skill in a pinch. He shouldn’t factor into the team’s full-time plans next year, but he’s a player they can rely to bring a solid effort every single game.
According to CapFriendly, the Blue Jackets have $4.754 million in cap space for 2023-24, with Tim Berni being the team’s only notable RFA. Lane Pederson will be a Group 6 UFA, while Gavin Bayreuther is a pending UFA. The Blue Jackets hold the third pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, which could net them a quality No. 1 center such as Leo Carlsson or Will Smith.
