How concerned should the Oilers be about their goaltending?

The Edmonton Oilers had a tough weekend back from the break, as they lost both games to the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals by a combined score of 13-6. Now, goaltending is the concern yet again with the Oilers, as it could be their biggest flaw for a team poised to contend for a Stanley Cup.

Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about the Oilers goaltending and how much they should be panicking, especially as the trade deadline approaches, on Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: Look at the way they started the season. I know it’s Connor McDavid, but they did pour something into 4 Nations Face-Off. And by the way, they had to open up with back-to-back games on the road.

No excuses made, you get dropped by the Flyers, that’s on you. But I also just don’t think that there’s that much that can be done to reshape this team now. That’s why I’m not at a 10, sounding the alarms and making all calls to try and figure it out. What is there that you can actually do?

I think they are what they are, and I think they’re a really good team that, at varying points, takes their foot off the gas, and it’s a reminder of how difficult it is to be consistent in the NHL.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I think that point of taking your foot off the gas is the one I’d look at.

And the other thing too is, just on a bigger picture, the goaltending market is just not there either. The Oilers can’t afford John Gibson’s contract unless the Anaheim Ducks retain significant money, and the sense is that they probably won’t retain significant money. So what do you do? Karel Vejmelka’s just as inconsistent as the other guys. I don’t know.

Frank Seravalli: I’m telling you, there’s not much they can do, and you’ve got to figure out the situation with Evander Kane. I taped the Frankly Speaking episode with Stan Bowman on Friday that’ll drop on Wednesday, and he said point blank that they don’t need to add a goalie. And beyond that, they’re hoping they can get an answer on Evander Kanes’ health by March 1st to be able to make the appropriate decisions by next Friday.
