Connor McDavid continues to climb the ranks.

In picking up a trio of points in Wednesday’s 5-3 road win over the Minnesota Wild, the Edmonton Oilers captain pushed his career point total to 1,044 and surpassed legendary forward Jari Kurri for second place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list.

Skating 10 seasons with the Oilers from 1980-90, Kurri’s time in Edmonton totaled 754 contests in which he amassed 474 goals and 569 assists for 1,043 points. The Finnish forward’s days with the Oilers were also underscored by a multitude of championships, counting five Stanley Cup wins.

With the feat, McDavid is now only 626 points back of Wayne Gretzky to become the Oilers’ all-time leading scorer. The five-time Art Ross Trophy winner is already second in franchise assists, behind Gretzky, and sixth in goals behind Gretzky, Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier, and teammate Leon Draisaitl.

Selected first overall by the Oilers atop the 2015 NHL Draft, through 10 seasons in Edmonton the 28-year-old native of Richmond Hill, Ont., has tallied 354 goals and 690 assists in 686 career contests. Beyond his collection of Art Ross wins, McDavid is also a three-time winner of the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP. Additionally, in 2022-23, McDavid took home the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy after pacing the NHL with 64 goals.

Leading the Oilers to Stanley Cup Final last season before falling to the Florida Panthers, along the way McDavid registered eight goals and 34 assists for 42 points in 25 games to claim the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The accomplishment marked just the fifth time in NHL history that a player had reached the 40-point plateau in the postseason, with McDavid joining a group that includes Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux as well as Gretzky, who scored 40 or more points in three separate Stanley Cup runs with the Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.
