Kahkonen perfect as Sharks take down Canadiens with three third-period goals
Kaapo Kahkonen was perfect in his best start of the season, stopping 28 of 28 shots to move to 3-5-2 as San Jose beat Montreal 4-0 off three third-period goals Tuesday. Tomas Hertl scored two goals (6,7) off a game-high six SOG as he now has nine points (3G/6A) in his last eight contests. Logan Couture also stayed scorching hot with his goal (13) and assist (9) as the centre now has 14 points (9G/5A) in his last 11 games, while Kevin Lebanc also had a multi-point performance with a pair of assists (8,9) off only 13:13 TOI. Unfortunately, Jake Allen’s struggles continued as the 32-year-old allowed three goals on 23 shots (.8770 SV%) with no offensive help to pick up his third loss in four starts and move to 6-8-0 on the season.
Hart and Hayes help Flyers snap 10-game losing streak as Philadelphia beats Islanders
Carter Hart was incredible Tuesday, stopping 23 of 24 shots (.958 SV%) to move to 7-5-4 and end the Philadelphia Flyers’ dreadful 10-game losing streak as they beat the New York Islanders 3-1 at home. Kevin Hayes led all skaters with two goals (7,8) across 20:14 TOI as the Flyers leader in points is now above a point-per-game with 24 points (8G/16A) in 23 games. Lukas Sedlak surprisingly had his second straight multi-point game with his two assists and +3 plus/minus performance, as he now has four points in his last two games after only three through his first 20 games of the season. Ilya Sorokin was his usual strong self despite picking up the loss as he allowed two goals on 33 shots (.938 SV%), snapping a four-game winning streak and moving to 10-6-0. Noah Dobson (7) had the lone Islanders’ goal as the second-year star now ranks third in the NHL among defensemen in goals and 12th in points (17).
Boston builds on top NHL record as Hall pushes Bruins past Lightning
Taylor Hall scored a minute into the game Tuesday and followed it up with a second goal (7,8) moments into the second period to lead Boston to their league-leading 19th win as the Bruins beat the Lightning 3-1 at home.
Jeremy Swayman won his fourth game in five starts after standing on his head and stopping 27 of 28 shots (.964 SV%) as the Bruins backup moved to 5-2-0 on the year. Brad Marchand continued his strong return from injury, scoring his seventh goal and 18th point in just 14 games as the Bruins continue to look unbeatable. Andrei Vasilevskiy had a strong start stopping 23 of 25 shots (.920 SV%) but getting little help offensively as he moved to 8-7-1. Steven Stamkos moved to 15th in the NHL in scoring as he had the only Lightning goal with his 13th goal of the season and 27th point through 22 games.
Hurricanes halt Penguins comeback as Kochetkov locks down overtime win
Pyotr Kochetkov continued to prove a suitable replacement for the injured Frederik Andersen, stopping 30 of 32 shots (.938 SV%) to move to 3-1-3 as Carolina beat Pittsburgh 3-2 on Tuesday. Brett Pesce scored (2) two minutes into overtime and added an assist (5) as he now has four points (2G/2A) in his last three games, while Sebastian Aho took the team lead in assists over with a pair of assists (15,16). Andrei Svechnikov moved above a point-per-game with a goal (14) and an assist (10), while Martin Necas scored (11) in the second period to move to 25 points in 23 games. Tristan Jarry had a fourth straight strong start but took the unfortunate loss after allowing three goals on 39 shots (.923 SV%) to move to 8-3-3. Sidney Crosby’s incredible run of late continued as the 35-year-old picked up a goal (12) and an assist (19) and now has 15 points (6G/9A) in his last eight games and ranks seventh in the NHL with 31 points in 23 games. Jake Guentzel led all Penguin skaters with four SOG leading to a goal (11) and an assist (10) as he continues to build off a strong first quarter of the season.
Saros stays hot as Predators squeak by Ducks at home
Juuse Saros stopped 34 of 35 shots (.971 SV%) to pick up his fifth win in six starts and move to 8-6-2 as Nashville handed Anaheim their league-leading 15th loss in a 2-1 victory in overtime. Roman Josi scored with a minute left in overtime (5) and added a team-high six SOG as the defenseman now ranks 11th in the NHL with 92 SOG. Matt Duchene picked up a pair of assists (11,12), while Colton Sissons (2) had the other Nashville goal as the unlikely scorer. John Gibson picked up his league-leading 13th loss after allowing two goals on 41 shots (.951 SV%) in his best start of the season, while Troy Terry scored his tenth goal for the Ducks’ only marker and now has 24 points in 23 games.
Hellebuyck posts shutout and Wheeler scores hat-trick as Jets crush injured Avalanche
Connor Hellebuyck was unbeatable Tuesday, stopping 40 of 40 shots and picking up his league-leading third shutout as Winnipeg beat Colorado 5-0 at home. Blake Wheeler picked up his fourth career hat-trick (5,6,7) and added an assist (13), while Cole Perfetti had his first career three-assist game (8,9,10) as he extended his point streak to 3 games (1G/4A). Mark Scheifele joined the point party with a goal (12), two assists (5,6) and a +4 plus/minus, with Josh Morrissey adding a goal (5) and an assist (20) to move to second in the NHL in points for a defenseman with 25 in 21 games. Alexandar Georgiev had the worst start of his early Avalanche career, allowing five goals on 23 shots (.783 SV%) to end a four-game winning streak and move to 10-3-1 on the season.
Ovechkin historically passes Gretzky for all time-road goals and leads Washington over Vancouver
Darcy Kuemper stopped 31 of 32 shots for his third straight win moving to 8-9-1 as Washington beat Vancouver 5-1 on the road. Alex Ovechkin scored two goals (12,13) just 11:52 minutes into the game Tuesday to historically pas Wayne Gretzky for the most road goals of all time with 403 for the great eight. John Carlson (7), Matthew Fehervary (1) and Anthony Mantha (6) all scored for the Capitals, with Mantha also picking up an assist (6) to join their captain as one of two multiple-point players. Spencer Martin came back down to earth after winning six of his last seven, allowing four goals on 27 shots (.852 SV%) to move to 6-2-1 after the loss. Nils Hoglander snapped an eight-game goalless drought (2), while J.T. Miller assisted to goal to extend his point streak to nine games (12 points).
Seattle win Franchise record sixth straight in a strange 17-goal game over Los Angeles
In the highest-scoring game of the year, Martin Jones allowed eight goals on 35 shots (.771 SV%) to move to 12-4-2 after Seattle beat Los Angeles 9-8 on the road to extend a six-game winning streak. Matty Beniers (8,9), Jared McCann (9,10), and Andre Burakovsky (8,9) each had two goals in the win, while Jordan Eberle led all skaters with four assists (12,13,14,15) as he now is one point below a point-per-game with 21 (6G/15A) in 22 GP. Alex Wennberg joined in on point night with a goal (5) and two assists (6,7), with Daniel Sprong also putting up a goal (5) and an assist (8) and Justin Schultz continuing his impressive first season in Seattle with three assists (11,12,13) as he now has 16 points (3G/13A) through 22 GP. Jonathan Quick was pulled after allowing five goals on 14 shots (.643 SV%) while Cal Petersen took the loss after also playing terribly and giving up four goals on 16 shots (.750 SV%) to move to 5-3-2. Gabriel Vilardi added to his team lead in goals with two markers (12,13), while Kevin Fiala collected four assists (16,17,18,19) to move his team lead in points to 26 in 25 games. Four Kings skaters amazingly finished with a goal, and an assist in the loss as Anze Kopitar, Adrian Kempe, Mike Anderson and Sean Durzi filled both point categories with one each. Drew Doughty had a three assists performance (12,13,14) while playing a team-high 26:17 TOI.
Bobrovsky’s struggles continue as Flames drop six on Panthers
Dan Vladar stopped 31 of 33 shots (.939 SV%) to move to 2-4-1 as Calgary beat Florida 6-2 Tuesday. Dillon Dube led all skaters with a goal (4) and two assists (4,5), while four Flames skaters (Andrew Mangiapane, Rasmus Andersson, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Tyler Toffoli) picked up a goal and an assist in the win.
Sergei Bobrovsky was terrible as he was left in for all six goals on 23 shots (.739 SV%). It was his third straight start with four or more goals against moving to 4-6-1 on the year. Nick Cousins (3) and Sam Reinhart (7) had the two goals for Florida, while Aaron Ekblad picked up an assist (6) and now has nine points (3G/6A) in nine games since returning from injury on November 12th.
