Welcome to Daily Faceoff’s NHL DFS Value Plays, where five days a week from Monday to Friday, I break down hockey’s main slate, looking for the top value plays.

This value sheet includes salaries, projections for DraftKings and FanDuel for the top forward and defensemen values, as well as honourable mention forwards and three punt options for blue liners. While the main value plays look at spots to get different and their upside, the others revolve around their ability to produce peripheral points by taking shots and blocking them. These players are always live for the bonus on DraftKings, where all the value plays are directed for.

These projections don’t tell you exactly what’s going to happen. One game samples have too much randomness to pin down exact predictions. Instead, the projections represent a player’s average performance if that matchup was played repeatedly. There is a wide range of possible outcomes, and the projections represent each player’s average of those possibilities.

Taylor Hall (W, CHI2, PP2) – (DK-$4,300 / FD $5,800)
DFO Projection: DK – 7.9 / FD –
10.1

After missing the overwhelming majority of last season due to a knee injury, Taylor Hall is starting to find his way for the Chicago Blackhawks, and is fresh off a two-assist performance against the Anaheim Ducks. Tonight, against the Detroit Red Wings, he projects as one of the top value plays in thanks to a solid matchup, and a strong floor in thanks to his shot and block volume.

Jeff Skinner (W, EDM1, PP2) – ($3,500 / $6,000)
DFO Projection: DK – 7.8 / FD –
10.2

Connor McDavid has risen and returns to the Oilers lineup tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights, and Jeff Skinner is staying on the top line alongside him and Zach Hyman. Since arriving in Edmonton Skinner has been solid, scoring three goals and six points in 13 games, but his 7.5 percent shooting percentage is nearly half of his career average, and his 1.4 individual expected goals per hour are above his 1.0 actual goals per hour, so he’s due to find the back of the net. In thanks to his excellent shot volume, 12.7 shots per hour, he should find that soon.

Ben Chiarot (D, DET-2) ($3,100 / $5,200)
DFO Projection: DK – 6.7 / FD
8.4

Chiarot is projected as one of the top value defencemen tonight, in thanks to his excellent floor of shot block volume, 6.4 per hour, while adding some value with shots on goal. There’s not much offense in his game, but he can pay off fairly easily, much as he’s done this year averaging 7.0 DraftKings points per game.

Rasmus Sandin (D, WSH-2, PP2) ($3,200 / $5,100)
DFO Projection: DK – 6.3 / FD
8.3

Sandin looks to be in a great spot, speaking of defensemen who have paid off well, as he’s put up 8.2 DKFPPG this season. He projects well tonight as another player who blocks a boatload of shots and adds some on net of his own. He might be a higher upside play in thanks to some assist production this year.

Honourable mention forwards

  1. Vladimir Tarasenko (W, DET3, PP2) ($3,200/$5,000): DK – 7.2 / FD – 7.2
  2. Ryan Donato (W, CHI1, PP1) ($3,100/$5,300): DK – 6.5 / FD – 8.2
  3. Pierre-Luc Dubois (C, WSH2, PP2) ($4,500/$5,000): DK – 8.4 / FD – 11.0

Top Punt Defensemen

  1. Erik Gustafsson (DET-3, PP2) ($2,900/$4,000): DK – 5.8 / FD – 7.7
  2. Wyatt Kaiser (CHI-1) ($2,700/$3,900): DK – 4.7 / FD – 6.0
  3. Zach Whitecloud (VGK-3) ($2,900/$3,800): DK – 4.6 / FD – 5.8
