Daily Roundup: Tyler Seguin, Ben Bishop and Gustav Nyquist undergo surgery, Ryan Pulock signs, and more

Surgery season

Surgeries for a number of players have been revealed in recent days. From the Dallas Stars, both Ben Bishop (knee) and Tyler Seguin (hip) have gone under the knife with both players expected to miss five months as they recover.

Bishop had meniscus repaired in his right knee with his procedure performed on Oct. 21, while Seguin underwent a right hip arthroscopy and labral repair on Nov. 2.

Last year, Seguin, 28, scored 17 goals and 50 points in 69 games and another 13 points in 26 playoff games. Bishop, 33, played in 44 games for the Stars this year posting a 21-16-4 record and a .920 save percentage, and appeared in only three playoff games.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Gustav Nyquist underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and is expected to miss five to six months.

“This was a chronic issue that Gus has been dealing with for a number of seasons,” said Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen in a press release.

“He has been able to perform at a high level, but a cyst in the area developed over time that has inhibited his ability to continue to do so. As a result, surgery was the best course of action and we look forward to having him back at full strength this season.”

The 31-year-old scored 42 points in 70 games this year, with another two points coming in 10 playoff games.

Pulock signs

The New York Islanders have inked Ryan Pulock to a two-year, $5-m AAV deal. The deal, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, will see the right-shot defenceman earn $3.34-m in the first year and $6.66-m in the second year.

The 26-year-old native of Dauphin, Man., scored 10 goals and 35 points in 68 games this year adding another 10 points in 22 games in the playoffs.

Flames to try Lindholm at center?

Calgary Flames head coach Geoff Ward is looking to open up the club’s top-six and may do so by shifting winger Elias Lindholm to the middle of the ice.

Ward spoke with Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, where he said it’s an option.

“I think we really want to explore whether or not we have a better lineup with Elias Lindholm at center than right wing,” Ward told Sportsnet’s Eric Francis. “It certainly is an option. I think with the depth we’ve acquired in free agency we can take a look at that. We know how the other lineup fits together and are comfortable with that.”

Calgary has signed wingers Josh Leivo, Joakim Nordstrom and Dominik Simon, theoretically giving the Flames the option of having Lindholm in the middle.

It wouldn’t be anything new for Lindholm, who even last year took 800 faceoffs in 70 games. In two years with the Flames, Lindholm has scored 56 goals and 132 points in 151 games.
