Welcome to the DailyFaceoff Fantasy Minute for Thursday, December 19th.
Wednesday was a mini Trade Deadline ahead of the holiday roster freeze. Here’s a recap of yesterday’s trade action:
TRADES
- The Seattle Kraken acquired Kaapo Kakko from the New York Rangers for Will Borgen, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2025 sixth-round pick. Kakko is not someone worth rushing to the waiver wire for right now, but I would add him to your watch list. He spent most of his time with New York on the third-line and PP2; if he sees a top-6 role in Seattle, he could work his way back into the fantasy conversation. Kakko has just 14 points (4G / 10A) in 30 games this season.
- The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Alexandre Carrier from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Justin Barron. Carrier, who signed a three-year contract extension worth $3.75M AAV in the summer, has missed the last three games with an upper-body injury.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Pierre-Olivier Joseph from the St. Louis Blues for future considerations. Joseph played in Pittsburgh from 2021 to 2024, posting 37 points (8G / 29A) in 147 games. This season, he had just two assists in 23 games with the Blues before being dealt.
INJURIES
- Simon Edvinsson left Wednesday’s game with an upper-body injury and did not return. The Detroit Red Wings did not have an update on his status post-game.
- Vitek Vanecek is week-to-week with an upper-body injury, so Yaroslav Askarov has been recalled from the AHL. Askarov went 1-0-1 with a 1.96 GAA, .927 SV% and two quality starts in two games with the Sharks earlier this season.
FANTASY WAIVER WIRE PICKUP
If you’re looking for blueline help on the Fantasy Hockey waiver wire, check out Jackson Lacombe of the Anaheim Ducks at 9% rostered. Lacombe recently replaced Olen Zellweger on the Ducks’ top power-play unit and has seven points (4G / 3A) and 19 SOG (2.7 SOG/gm) while averaging 19:58 TOI in his last seven games.
