The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a second-round pick, prospect Artem Grushnikov and a conditional 2026 third-round pick, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

The New Jersey Devils are also involved with the deal, retaining some of Tanev’s $4.5 million cap hit. They will receive a fourth-round pick.

The 34-year-old Tanev has been the subject of trade rumours for most of the 2023-24 season and was widely expected to be moved ahead of the March 8 NHL Trade Deadline.

Through 56 games this season, Tanev has one goal and 13 assists for 14 points, averaging 19:50 of ice time. In 14 NHL seasons with the Flames and Vancouver Canucks, Tanev has 32 goals and 153 assists for 185 points through 773 career games.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Seravalli mentioned how Tanev would be a great fit for a Stars group that’s looking to make a run at the Stanley Cup.

“I think he provides a different element for this team,” Seravalli said. “He’s second in the league in blocked shots, and the Stars are 22nd. I think they could use someone who just does things a little differently than everybody else.

The Stars are currently 35-17-9 with 79 points, tied for first with the Winnipeg Jets in the Central Division. They’re 4-3-3 in their last 10 games and have lost two straight.

They face the Jets on Thursday night at home before a home-and-home with the San Jose Sharks, hosting the Sharks on Saturday then heading to San Jose next Tuesday.
