Dallas Stars hire Peter DeBoer as head coach
The Dallas Stars will announce on Wednesday that Peter DeBoer will be their new head coach.
The Stars had a coaching vacancy after previous head coach Rick Bowness stepped down from the position after the team’s elimination in the first round to the Calgary Flames. Bowness had previously coached the Stars to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final after taking over the role from Jim Montgomery, who was fired for unprofessional conduct.
The Stars will be the fifth team that DeBoer has coached in his career. He previously coached the Vegas Golden Knights, who he helped to back-to-back final-four appearances before he was fired for missing the playoffs in 2022. He also was the head coach of the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, and San Jose Sharks, going to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season with the Devils and Sharks. In 1,015 games coached, he has a 513-379-123 record, and a 56-47 record in the playoffs.
That’s one task completed with a few more to go in this offseason for the Stars as they look to return to the Stanley Cup Final. They currently have more than $20 million in cap space, with Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger pending restricted free agents, and John Klingberg heading to unrestricted free agency.
