Kyrou plays for the Sarina Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, but started the year with the Erie Otters. He recorded 36 points in 27 games with the Otters and has 10 goals and 31 points in 29 games with the Sting to give him 67 on the year.
The 19-year-old was recently named the OHL Player of the Week after totaling seven points (two goals, three assists) in three games while holding a plus-minus rating of plus-six.
The Stars drafted the Komoka, Ontario product in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft. The Stars had a two-year window to sign him to an entry-level contract before he would become eligible for the NHL Draft again. The Stars liked what they saw, and decided to ink Jordan Kyrou’s younger brother early.
One thing to note, Kyrou has a mid-2003 September birthday, meaning he actually missed the cutoff for the 2021 NHL Draft. Then in 2020-21, the OHL shut down its season entirely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since he will be 20 next season, the Stars do have the option as per the NHL-CHL transfer agreement — which states that CHL prospects over the age of 20 by Dec. 31 are eligible to be assigned to the American Hockey League — to send him down to play for the Texas Stars. With a plethora of young defenders in the system already for the Stars such as Miro Heiskanen, Esa Lindell, and Thomas Harley, Kyrou is in good hands.
The Sting sit third in the OHL’s Western Conference with 76 points. They host the Soo Greyhounds and Kitchener Rangers this weekend.
