On Friday, Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed defenseman Alexander Petrovic to a two-year, two-way contract. The contract will kick in for the 2024-25 season.

Petrovic has mostly been an American Hockey League defenseman. The Edmonton, Alberta native made his professional debut in March 2012 and has racked up 427 AHL games in his career. Over nine seasons with the San Antonio Rampage, Providence Bruins, Stockton Heat and Texas Stars, Petrovic has recorded 151 points (32 goals, 119 assists), 453 penalty minutes, nine game-winning goals and a plus-37 rating.

In 2023-24, he collected 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 70 regular-season AHL games and added one goal in seven Calder Cup Playoff games.

After the AHL season, he joined Dallas and eventually drew into the lineup for his first Stanley Cup Playoff game since 2016. The 32-year-old filled in nicely when the Stars needed a sixth defenseman in the second round against the Colorado Avalanche. He was a great fit, playing in seven games and averaging over 12 minutes of ice time per game. Although he did not record a point, he finished with a plus-1 rating.

In his NHL career, Petrovic has 50 points (five goals, 45 assists) in 264 regular-season games across nine seasons. He made his NHL debut with the Panthers in 2013 and played his first seven seasons in Florida.

After being traded to the Edmonton Oilers at the 2019 trade deadline for a 2019 third-round draft pick and defenseman Chris Wideman, Petrovic played nine games with the Oilers. He was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames and Stars and remained in the AHL until he was called up to Dallas for one game in 2023-24.

Petrovic was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round (No. 36) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
