The Dallas Stars have signed depth defenseman Jerad Rosburg to a one-year, $750,000 extension.

Rosburg had three assists in 12 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars this year, an injury-shortened campaign. He has 21 points over three AHL seasons, with the 27-year-old acting as a physical defenseman.

Before turning pro, Rosburg had a four-year run with Michigan State University. He had 55 points in 141 games over five years with 133 penalty minutes to boot. He was named to the Big 10’s second all-star team in 2020 before joining the Texas Stars to finish off the season. Internationally, Rosburg skated with USA at the 2013 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, recording zero points.

Rosburg’s father, Jerry Rosburg, is an NFL coach. He served as an interim bench boss for two games with Denver, going 1-1. He served many roles for various teams through the college and professional rankings, winning Super Bowl XLVII as a member of the Baltimore Ravens in 2013.

According to CapFriendly, the Stars have $5.144 million in cap space for the 2023-24 season. Ty Dellandrea is the only RFA on the roster, with Max Domi, Luke Glendening, Joel Kiviranta and Joel Hanley set to become UFAs. The team could look to use some new blood in the lineup, including top prospect Logan Stankoven, to save some money, but could also look to make a big addition like Blake Wheeler.

As for Rosburg, who, at 27, has not played an NHL game, he’ll likely return to Texas for next season. The team have a host of pending UFA defensemen in the minors, including Ben Gleason, Will Butcher and Dawson Barteaux.
