Stars sign Sam Steel to two-year extension

The Dallas Stars have signed center Sam Steel to a two-year extension worth $2.1-million per season, the club announced Friday.
Skating in his second season with the Stars, Steel has made 53 appearances in 2024-25 in which he has registered four goals and 13 assists for 17 points alongside 22 penalty minutes and a minus-two rating. Initially joining the Stars in the 2023 offseason as an unrestricted free agent, Steel wrapped up his first season in Dallas with 24 points counting nine goals and 15 assists coming in 77 contests. Steel then added one goal and four assists for five points through 19 appearances in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Originally chosen 30th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2016 NHL Draft, Steel has seen 392 career contests counting stops with the Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Stars in which he has totaled 47 goals and 87 assists for 134 points. With the Wild in 2022-23, Steel reached career highs in all major offensive categories including 10 goals, 18 assists, and 28 points.
A graduate of the WHL’s Regina Pats, Steel’s time in the junior ranks saw him amass 123 goals and 215 assists for 338 points over five seasons and 258 appearances. With the Pats in 2016-17, Steel was presented with the Four Broncos Trophy as the WHL’s Player of the Year after he paced the league with 131 points counting 50 goals and 81 assists coming in 66 outings. The following year, Steel took home the Stafford Smythe Trophy as Memorial Cup MVP after a dominant performance saw him headline the CHL’s year-end tournament with 13 points coming in just five games.
A 27-year-old native of Ardrossan, Alta., Steel has also seen success in international competition including a gold-medal win with Team Canada at the 2018 World Juniors in which he finished second in team scoring with four goals and five assists for nine points in seven appearances.
