The Dallas Stars have signed center Wyatt Johnston to a five-year contract extension worth $8.4 million per season, reports TSN’s Darren Dreger.

Skating in his third season with the Stars, through 62 games in 2024-25 the 21-year-old Toronto native has approached point-per-game production in collecting 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points, only five back of fellow forward Jason Robertson for the team lead.

Originally chosen 23rd overall by Dallas in the 2021 NHL Draft, Johnston has totaled 226 contests across three seasons with the Stars in which he has amassed 79 goals and 86 assists for 165 points. As a freshman, Johnston led all league rookies with 24 goals as part of a 41-point campaign to earn a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team. Johnston has also added 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points in 38 postseason appearances. During the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Johnston tied for the lead in Stars scoring as he put up 16 points in 19 outings.

A dominant offensive performer in the junior ranks during his time with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires, the 2021-22 campaign saw Johnston lead the league with 124 points through 68 regular-season games before then headlining the postseason with 41 points in 25 outings. For his efforts, Johnston was presented with the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player.

Johnston has also seen success in international competition highlighted by a gold medal win at the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship where he put up two goals and two assists for four points in seven games en route to the first place finish.

For the Stars, the club is in the midst of a four-game win streak that has pushed its record to 41-19-2 and 84 points to sit second place in the Central Division. The Stars will shoot for their fifth-straight victory when the club returns to the ice Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers.
