Darcy Kuemper has been a great addition for the Kings

One of the low-key good stories in the first month of the 2024-25 season has been the play of Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

After winning the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, the native of Saskatoon moved east to join the Washington Capitals. Unfortunately, injuries and lackluster play led to him being dealt out of the U.S. capital, as the Kings acquired him via trade back in June.

Despite the average expectations for him heading into the season, Kuemper has found his groove in his second stint in Hollywood. Through seven starts thus far, he has a 4-0-3 record with a 2.67 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. While those numbers aren’t mind-blowing, Kuemper has played well enough to give the Kings a chance to win every night.

The 34-year-old posted his first shutout of the season on Monday night, his third appearance since returning from injured reserve.

On Tuesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discussed Kuemper’s performance so far this season.

Frank Seravalli: The Kings have points in every game that Darcy Kuemper has played so far this season.

Tyler Yaremchuk: [The Kings] are still staying good defensively. That’s helping Kuemper as well. He hasn’t faced 30 shots in a game in four starts.

Frank: I also think there is a familiarity factor that exists with Kuemper, in the sense that he’s played for the Kings before. He kind of knew what he was stepping into, they knew him a little bit. I know it’s been a while since he’s been there, but to come back to that, it’s a lot different than going somewhere totally new. When you have a team in front of you that defends pretty well, even outside that structure and support system, that is certainly important.
