The Detroit Red Wings haven’t participated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2015-16, but following a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators Thursday night, fans in Hockeytown may see their team play beyond mid-April for the first time in 10 years.

On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Red Wings’ win over the Senators and if their performance has encouraged general manager Steve Yzerman to turn the team into buyers at the Trade Deadline.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s quickly touch on the Red Wings: A 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators last night. Dylan Larkin had a pair of goals, and again, that’s a team that’s trying to send a message to their front office and GM Steve Yzerman that “we are good enough for reinforcements this year.”

It was a big, big problem last year when Larkin called out Yzerman, then Yzerman snapped back at Larkin. But this year, Larkin has walked the walk and said “alright, Stevie Y, you got to add here.”

Carter Hutton: And again, Larkin was the one doing this. That’s the important factor when you look at these cases where if you get behind a microphone and say things that could go on behind closed doors, you better back it up … for Larkin to back it up post-Olympic break, every goal that was scored last night was by a Team USA member. It’s important to see that these guys are adjusting to the NHL quickly.

For Detroit, I think things are lining up well to try and do something and beef up this team. I know Tyler Myers has been thrown around, and there’s going to be some potential for someone to move in there and help out, but the way John Gibson is playing, and how Moritz Seider is playing and how well he played for Team Germany, this is a very dangerous team — and not just this year, but will be good for years to come.
