Red Wings’ GM Steve Yzerman says there’s ‘mutual interest’ in bringing back Patrick Kane

While dollars and cents have to be discussed, it looks like Hockeytown would like to keep a veteran scorer around.
During his end-of-season media availability, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman admits he and his staff are hopeful of re-signing forward Patrick Kane to an extension.

“We had a brief discussion in our meeting,” Yzerman explained. “We would preferably try to get some things in place, if we can, early. If not, we’ll figure out something down the road. There’s strong mutual interest on both parties. … I know Patrick had suggested it in his time up here with the media. … I’m optimistic.”
Kane spent the 2024-25 season on a one-year deal he signed with Detroit in June of last year. It came after a fruitful end to the 2023-24 season where the three-time Stanley Cup champion proved he could still be a difference-maker despite being years past his prime.
Though Kane battled injuries during this past year, he was still one of the more productive players on the Detroit roster. In 72 appearances, the 36-year-old scored 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points, placing him fourth on the team in scoring.
The Red Wings finished sixth in the Atlantic Division, missing the playoffs for the ninth straight season.
Yzerman likes how Kane has carried himself during his short stint with the Wings.
“He played well for us, played an important role for us. He’s a very professional guy in his approach and his attitude. He’s a good asset for us.”
In 122 total games with the Red Wings, Kane has potted 41 goals and 65 assists for 106 points, a little over a 71-point pace in an 82-game season.
The former Chicago Blackhawk has played in 1,302 games in his 18 seasons in the NHL, scoring 492 goals and 851 assists for 1,343 points. He’s the all-time leading scorer among American-born players in NHL history. Kane has also notched 138 points in 143 postseason games.
Kane has won the Calder Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and the 2015-16 Hart Trophy.
