Sources tell Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli that Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Jeff Petry underwent surgery and will miss the next six to eight weeks.

Petry, who has been out since Jan. 2, has a goal and five assists for six points in 34 regular-season games this season, averaging 19:11 of ice time. The 37-year-old defender has recorded four 40-point seasons, all during his time with the Montreal Canadiens.

Now in his 15th NHL season, Petry has 96 goals and 287 assists for 383 points in 971 regular-season games with the Red Wings, Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers.

The Red Wings are 26-21-5 with 57 points, sixth in the Atlantic Division and one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Detroit has won five straight, including a 3-2 win over the Oilers on Thursday and 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Forward Lucas Raymond has 20 goals and 36 assists for 56 points, leading the team in both assists and points. Captain Dylan Larkin has a team-leading 23 goals, and forward Alex DeBrincat has 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points.

Earlier in the day, the Red Wings activated forward Patrick Kane off Injured Reserve (IR), then placed forward J.T. Compher on IR, retroactive to Jan. 25. Kane has been out of the lineup since Detroit’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 21 due to an upper-body injury. In 42 games this season, the 36-year-old has scored 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points, sitting fifth on the team in scoring.

Compher hasn’t played since Jan. 25, when he received a hard hit from Lightning defenseman Emil Lilleberg. Lilleberg ended up being suspended two games for the hit, while Compher has been listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

The 29-year-old played in Detroit’s first 48 games of the season, potting six goals and 15 assists for 21 points. He has been a little off the pace, which led to him scoring 48 points in 77 games during his first campaign in Hockeytown last year.
