Red Wings’ Patrick Kane out day-to-day with upper-body injury
The Detroit Red Wings will be without right winger Patrick Kane on a day-to-day basis due to an upper-body injury, reports Max Bultman of The Athletic.
Skating in his second season with the Red Wings, Kane has made 42 appearances in which he has collected 11 goals and 19 assists to sit fourth in team scoring with 30 points.
Originally joining the Red Wings in November 2023 as an unrestricted free agent, the future Hall of Famer headed to Detroit following a 16-year run with the Chicago Blackhawks that was highlighted by three Stanley Cup wins. Including his short stint with the New York Rangers, Kane has totaled 1,272 career contests in which he has registered 482 goals with 832 assists for 1,314 points, making him the second-highest scoring American-born player of all-time and only 61 points shy of surpassing former Red Wings forward Mike Modano for top spot.
Kane’s host of accolades also counts the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in recognition of his play during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs when he put up 19 points through 23 appearances to guide the Blackhawks to their second championship in four years. In all, Kane has neared point-per-game production in the postseason, tallying 53 goals and 85 assists through 143 playoff outings.
Per PuckPedia, Kane carries a one year, bonus-laden contract that has a $4-million annual average value plus an additional $2.5-million in performance bonuses, which will also count against the salary cap should Kane achieve them. The 36-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., native is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming offseason.
Entering Thursday’s contest against the Atlantic Division rival Montreal Canadiens, the Red Wings sit 21-21-7 on the season and five points back of the Ottawa Senators for the second wildcard seed in the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings have not qualified for the postseason since 2016, the NHL’s second-longest active drought behind only the Buffalo Sabres.
