Detroit Red Wings re-sign defenseman Jared McIsaac to one-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Jared McIsaac to a one-year, two-way contract extension, the club announced Saturday afternoon.

McIsaac, 23, collected 22 points (three goals, 19 assists) in 61 games with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2022–23 regular season. He has yet to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Red Wings originally selected McIsaac in the second round (No. 36 overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. The six-foot-one defenseman, who shoots left, has yet to make his NHL debut through his first three professional seasons.

The club did not immediately disclose the financial details of McIsaac’s new two-way deal. His entry-level contract with the Red Wings expired on July 1, at which point he became a restricted free agent without arbitration rights.

A product of Truro, Nova Scotia, McIsaac began his junior career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Halifax Mooseheads in 2016. He spent parts of four seasons with the Mooseheads before being traded to the Moncton Wildcats in 2020.

After a brief stint with Finnish club HPK Hameenlinna at the start of the 2020–21 season, McIsaac made his pro debut with the Griffins and appeared in 10 out of 32 games with the club as a 20-year-old. He emerged as a full-time AHL defenceman the following season, racking up five goals and 24 points in 70 games.

Through 141 games over three AHL seasons with the Griffins, McIsaac has amassed 48 points (eight goals, 40 assists) and 66 penalty minutes while posting a minus-26 rating.

With McIsaac now under contract for the 2023–24 season, the only restricted free agent left for the Red Wings to deal with this summer is 23-year-old center Joe Veleno. On top of that, it’s now possible for the Red Wings to explore contract extensions with top RFAs-to-be Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Jonatan Berggren, and Michael Rasmussen.
