The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday they signed defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year, $1 million contract though the 2025-26 season.

The 34-year-old Hamonic played 59 games with the Ottawa Senators in 2024-25, scoring one goal and recording six assists for seven points, averaging 17:04 of ice time per game. Through 15 NHL seasons, Hamonic has recorded 53 goals and 189 assists for 242 points in 900 career regular-season games with the Senators, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders.

His most productive NHL season came in 2014-15 with the Islanders, recording five goals and 28 assists for 33 points, hitting career highs in both assists and points while averaging 21:47 of ice time.

Hamonic, a native of St. Malo, Man., has appeared in 22 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, posting one goal and three assists for four points.

Drafted by the Islanders in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Hamonic spent parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League, playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors and Brandon Wheat Kings. In 181 WHL regular-season games, he scored 29 goals and 80 assists for 109 points. He also scored four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 21 WHL playoff games.

Internationally, Hamonic represented Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championships, helping them earn a silver medal. He also wore the maple leaf at the 2008 World Under-18 Championships, helping them win gold.

The Red Wings finished the 2024-25 season with a 39-35-8 record and 86 points, sixth in the Atlantic Division and falling five points short of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Detroit has now missed the playoffs for nine straight seasons.
