The Detroit Red Wings continue to reshape their roster as they’ve announced a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, which sees forward Robby Fabbri and a 2025 conditional fourth-round pick head to Anaheim in exchange for goaltender Gage Alexander.

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli points out, the condition to the 2025 draft pick is linked to where the Red Wings finish next season, compared to the Boston Bruins:

Fabbri, 28, appeared in 68 games for the Red Wings last season, scoring 18 goals and finishing with 32 points. The Mississauga, ON native has one season remaining on his contract, and is owed $4 million in 2024-25. Fabbri was originally acquired by the Red Wings back in 2019 in a trade with the St Louis Blues.

Fabbri’s best season was way back during his rookie campaign in 2015-16 when he collected a career-high 37 points in 72 games. Unfortunately injuries have crept into the picture on numerous occasions throughout Fabbri’s entire career as he’s yet to play a full 82-game season.

The 6-foot-1 winger became expendable for Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman after the team re-signed Patrick Kane and brought in Vladimir Tarasenko on a two-year deal. The rebuilding Ducks align as a great place for Fabbri to play out his contract year and hopefully have a healthy, productive season and is awarded for it next summer. Adding Fabbri’s $4 million salary brings Anaheim up past the cap floor for the 2024-25 season, as general manager Pat Verbeek has been very quiet throughout the first few days of free agency.

In Alexander, the Red Wings receive a 22-year-old 6-foot-6 goaltender who was originally a fifth-round pick of the Ducks back in 2021. The Okotoks, AB native spent last season suiting up for the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL, where he posted a 5-8-2 record, along with a 3.76 goals against average and a .887 save percentage.

Alexander has spent the majority of his professional career playing at the ECHL level and will look to make an impression on the Red Wings come training camp in September.
