One of the top netminders in college hockey is going to stay on campus for at least one more season.

Sources confirmed to Daily Faceoff that Detroit Red Wings’ prospect Trey Augustine will return to Michigan State for his junior season in 2025-26.

Mike McMahon of College Hockey News was the first to report the Spartan goaltender’s decision on Tuesday morning.

Augustine is coming off another terrific season in East Lansing. The South Lyon, Michigan native was named the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year after posting a 19-7-4 record, with a 2.08 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and three shutouts, and has been named one of the finalists for the Mike Richter Award as the country’s top college netminder.

His efforts helped Michigan State sweep the Big Ten championships for the second straight year, as the Spartans earned a share of the regular season title before winning the conference championship last month.

Unfortunately, the Big Ten success failed to lead to a deep run in the national tournament, as the Spartans were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Cornell last Thursday.

There was some speculation that Augustine was going to turn pro after his sophomore season. Outside of winning a national championship, the 20-year-old has little to prove in the college ranks, having won back-to-back gold medals with the U.S. at the IIHF World Junior Championships.

However, with the possibility of fellow goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa staying with the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, to start next year rather than be in Detroit, it makes sense that Augustine stay in college and get starter’s minutes at Michigan State.

In 65 career NCAA appearances, Augustine has a 42-16-6 record with a 2.55 GAA, a .919 SV% and six shutouts.

News of Augustine’s status has already led to a change in the goalie situation at MSU. Luca Di Pasquo, who has played at the last two Great Lakes Invitationals while Augustine’s been at the World Juniors, formally entered the transfer portal on Monday.
