Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg withdraws consideration for Red Wings job

It appears that the Detroit Red Wings will have to look further than across the street for their new general manager.

On Monday, Detroit Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg withdrew his name from consideration for the vacant Red Wings position.

The Red Wings are looking to replace the departed Steve Yzerman, who stepped down as the team’s executive vice president and general manager in July. On the August 25th episode of his 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman reported that Greenberg, who has been the Tigers’ general manager since September of 2023, was in consideration for the Red Wings job.

While at first blush it seemed strange that an executive working in Major League Baseball would be a candidate for a high-ranking NHL job, Greenberg does have experience in hockey. From April of 2022 until taking the Tigers’ job, Greenberg was an associate general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks. According to the Tigers’ announcement when they hired Greenberg, his responsibilities with the Blackhawks included overseeing “the strategic systems and processes in hockey operations” and working “across all functions of hockey operations, including scouting, development, coaching and operations to establish and optimize a modern, continually evolving approach.”

Now that Greenberg has taken his hat out of the ring, the Red Wings will have to look elsewhere to find their next general manager. According to Friedman, the Red Wings have interviewed internal candidates Shawn Horcoff and Kris Draper, both of whom were assistant general managers under Yzerman. Friedman also mentioned Florida Panthers assistant general manager Brett Peterson and San Jose Sharks assistant general manager Jeff Kealty as names that could be on the Red Wings’ radar.

Whoever Detroit hires will have their work cut out for them, as they’ll have to manage the situation with star center Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade out of Detroit in June.
