‘You dream about playing for Team Canada’: Greaves on being part of the future of Canada’s crease

Every hockey-playing kid dreams of two things growing up. Winning the Stanley Cup and playing for your country.

For one Jet Greaves, his unlikely path has placed his name into a very select conversation.

The Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender had a breakout season, spending just about the entire in the NHL for the first time in his professional career, dragging his team from the bottom of the Eastern Conference to contend for a Wild Card spot. On top of establishing himself as a potential starter for the Blue Jackets in the future, the 25-year-old earned a spot on Canada’s roster at the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Greaves ended up appearing in six of the team’s eight games, including all three games of the medal round, as Canada made it to the bronze medal game. While the Canadians were stunned by Norway in the consolation game, Greaves left an impact on his teammates and others who watched the tournament, posting a 1.88 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage and one shutout.

With Canada struggling to find consistent goaltending on the international stage, despite Jordan Binnington’s recent heroics at the 4 Nations Face-Off and 2026 Winter Olympics, a path seems to have opened for Greaves to be a contender for Canada moving forward.

On this week’s edition of The Sheet, Greaves joined Jeff Marek to discuss the possibility of him becoming one of Canada’s top goaltenders of the future.

Jet Greaves: I’m just I’m honored to be even mentioned in that conversation. I’ve said it before, but you grow up being a kid in Canada, playing hockey, dreaming about playing in the NHL, and playing for Team Canada one day. So, to be able to just have that experience that I did, I’m so grateful for.

I don’t know what the future is going to bring for me. The process stays the same. It’s still just about continuing to improve every day and just helping my hockey team win games, whichever team that is in these situations. I’m definitely very grateful that people would even consider me for those conversations, but I also know that, I think there’s a lot of amazing goalies. I think Binnington’s done an amazing job these past few tournaments for Canada, and he’s definitely someone that I look up to. I feel like I’ve learned a lot from watching him and actually getting to know him a little bit. So, I’ve got a lot of respect for the guys that we have in Canada. The older guys, and I think there’s a lot of really good young guys coming up as well. I’m just honored to have my name in that conversation.
