Ducks’ Lukas Dostal has been one of the NHL’s biggest surprises in 2024-25
When it comes to goaltenders who are exceeding expectations this season, Anaheim Ducks’ netminder Lukas Dostal deserves to be a part of the conversation.
The 24-year-old Dostal has made 11 appearances this year for the rebuilding Ducks, posting a 4-5-2 record, along with a 2.73 goals against average and an impressive .922 save percentage. Dostal is off to a stellar start this season, ranking third in the NHL in save percentage for goaltenders who have made at least 10 starts.
While the Ducks may be near the bottom of the NHL standings, it’s been no fault of Dostal’s, who is showing GM Pat Verbeek that he’s quickly become the long-term solution in net for Anaheim.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen were joined by former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton, to discuss who he felt is the biggest surprise among goalies this season.
Cohen: Huts, let me ask you, looking around the league is there one goaltender that has been the biggest surprise to you, that you just didn’t expect?
Hutton: You know honestly, there is a few guys I could pick out, but Lukas Dostal. I think what he’s doing right now in Anaheim would be my guy. I think he’s just been so compact, especially playing on a team that is still younger, still in that rebuild phase while they’ve kept a few guys around. He’s done such a good job, and I think if I was trying to show a younger goalie a guy to maintain your game around, it would be him. Especially, he’s not a big guy (6-foot-2), and we’ve talked about (Connor) Hellebuyck, you see all these guys who are 6’4, 6’5, 6’6, having success, he does a great job at his size managing the game and managing the crease. You know, I think Dostal’s been impressive since the World Championship last year, and he’s used that as a springboard this year and into this season.
