A dangerous trip during last night’s preseason game between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames has the former club’s captain speaking out.

Connor McDavid has begun to find his voice as a leader in this league and didn’t shy away from making comments after he crashed into the net on what he called a “dangerous” trip.

The questionable play happened during the Oilers tying goal in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory. McDavid cut around the Flames defense driving to the net and while doing so, Flames defenseman Chris Tanev tried to push back.

But his stick got caught between McDavid’s legs and the speedster crashed into the ice and into Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom. No penalty was called.

“Obviously they have the right to defend their net and defend me trying to get in there but when the stick kinda comes into the feet there like Tanev’s did it’s a dangerous play for me and the goalie,” said McDavid. “I think you’d like to see that called a little more.”

There’s nobody in the league who can speak more to these incidents than McDavid. On April 6, 2019, McDavid got taken out in a similar fashion by then Flames captain Mark Giordano that resulted in McDavid suffering a fully torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), torn medial and lateral menisci, fully torn popliteus muscle, a complete tear of the posterior capsule and a tibial plateau fracture.
