Connor McDavid continues to do crazy things, as the Edmonton Oilers captain put up six assists in an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

McDavid, 27, becomes just the third player since 1997 to register six assists in one game, joining Kris Letang’s performance against the New York Islanders earlier this season and Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl, who did so against the Ottawa Senators in the 2020-21 season. It’s also the first time since the 1992-93 season that multiple players have had six-assist games in the same season.

McDavid fell just one assist short of the NHL record of seven assists, which ahs been achieved by Billy Taylor Sr. in 1947 and thrice by Wayne Gretzky in 1980, 1985 and 1986.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario product also managed to hit another milestone in that game, as the third assist to give the Oilers the 4-3 lead in Tuesday’s game got him to the 600-assist mark in his career. He becomes the fourth-fastest player to hit the milestone, doing so in just 616 games in his career. Only Wayne Gretzky (416 games), Mario Lemieux (514), and Bobby Orr (608) have hit the milestone faster to start their careers.

After a slow start to the season, McDavid has managed to return to his usual self, with 21 goals and 56 assists for 77 points in 47 games. Should the Oilers center play out the rest of the season, his point pace has him finishing with 131 points, which would be the second-highest total in his career but not quite at the level of his 153-point season in 2022-23.

The Oilers currently sit in third in the Pacific Division with a 31-17-1 record. They’ll be looking to build on this blowout win over the Red Wings when they visit St. Louis to play the Blues on Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.
