A substantial amount will be paid by one who participated in a couple of acts during the latest game of the Stanley Cup Final.

On Tuesday, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman had been fined $5,000 for roughing Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk during Game 3 of the final on Monday night, which saw the defending Cup champions run away with a 6-1 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

Additionally, Walman was issued another $5,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during the second period of the aforementioned game. The $10,000 pot goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. Both fines are the maximum allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement.

The first incident came late in the middle stanza. Walman, angry after Panthers forward A.J. Greer stole his glove, squirted water into the Florida bench from the Oilers’ side, catching Seth Jones. It led to a humorous moment as NHL on TNT analyst Brian Boucher, who was between the benches, seemed to be angry at Walman for getting him and his electrical equipment wet.

There was no penalty on the play.

The second act came when Walman got into it with Tkachuk near the Oilers’ goal in the third period. After throwing a not-so-subtle spear, Walman fed Tkachuk with a few punches. Walman received a minor penalty for roughing and another for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play.

This is the second (and third) time that Walman has been suspended in his NHL career, but the first time he’s had to pay up because of his actions during the playoffs. In Dec. 2023, then with the Detroit Red Wings, he was fined $2,500 for high-sticking former Buffalo Sabre and now Oiler teammate Jeff Skinner.

Walman has been a solid asset since being acquired by the Oilers from the San Jose Sharks, providing some depth on the back end. In 19 games in these playoffs, he’s scored a goal and eight points.

Game 4 between the Cats and Oilers is set for Thursday night. Puck drop is scheduled for a little after 8 p.m. ET.
