Edmonton Oilers re-sign Corey Perry to one-year, $1.4 million contract
The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday they have re-signed veteran forward Corey Perry to a one-year contract worth $1.4 million. The deal includes a $1.15-million cap hit and $250,000 in performance bonuses.
Perry, 39, enters his 20th NHL season and returns to the Oilers after appearing in 38 regular season games in Edmonton last season, recording 13 points. Perry would also chip in three points in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He averaged just over 10 minutes a game in the postseason and landed 18 hits along the way.
Perry decides to return for another season, and will once again play a depth role for the Oilers and help fill out their bottom six. He has also been a great mentor for the Oilers younger players and isn’t shy to take on a leadership role in Edmonton’s dressing room. Perry’s appeared in over 1300 regular season games and another 215 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Peterborough, Ontario native was originally a 2003 first-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks and his career has included stops with the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks and circles back for another season with the Oilers.
The Oilers were busy on Monday as they also re-signed depth forward Connor Brown and brought in both versatile veteran Viktor Arvidsson and defenseman Josh Brown. While they don’t officially have a general manager, the Oilers management brass is trying to do whatever they can to get the team back to the Stanley Cup Final next season.
After Perry’s contract was added to their books for next season, CapFriendly projects the Oilers to have $5.7 million in cap space. Edmonton still needs to re-sign restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway and is likely in the market for another depth forward.
