Oilers sign Alec Regula to two-year contract extension

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Friday that the club has signed defenseman Alec Regula to a two-year, two-way contract extension that carries a $775,000 cap hit.
The 24-year-old blueliner joined the Oilers as a waiver claim from the Boston Bruins in December 2024, but never hit the ice with the club or its AHL team, the Bakersfield Condors, while rehabbing a knee injury.
Originally chosen 67th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft, Regula was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2019 – when now Oilers GM Stan Bowman was the GM there – and stayed with the organization until being traded to the Bruins ahead of the 2023-24 season.
With the Blackhawks, he played 22 NHL games, scoring one goal, following his debut in May 2021. Meanwhile, he played 108 games with the club’s AHL affiliate, the Rockford Ice Hogs, scoring 12 goals and 51 points through that span.
He spent most of his time in the Bruins’ system with their AHL organization in Providence, scoring four goals and 36 points in 55 games in 2023-24, before being placed on the Bruins’ injury reserve ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
Prior to his NHL career, Regula spent three seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, where he crossed paths with current Oilers blueliner Evan Bouchard in the 2017-18 season.
As a rookie that season, he scored seven goals and 25 points with the Knights, while Bouchard netted 25 goals and 87 points.
At 6-foot-4, 210 lbs, Regula will look to find his way back into the NHL in 2025-26, as he looks to establish himself in a new organization, after a lengthy rehab process.
The current season, though, is far from done for the Oilers, who closed out their first-round Western Conference series in Game 6 against the LA Kings on Thursday night, and look to the second round against the Vegas Golden Knights.
