Oilers sign goaltender Samuel Jonsson to entry-level contract

The Edmonton Oilers announced Saturday that the club has signed goaltender Samuel Jonsson to a three-year, entry-level contract. Jonsson was originally chosen by the Oilers in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
Through 24 appearances this season with Bofors IK of the second-tier Swedish league, Jonsson posted a 17-6-0 record coupled with a .922 save percentage, 1.88 goals-against average, and six shutouts to earn recognition as the league’s Goaltender of the Year. Jonsson’s success then carried into the postseason where through five outings he found the win column twice while posting a .913 save percentage and 2.15 goals-against average.
In all, through three seasons in Sweden, the 6-foot-5 goaltender owns a 17-9-0 career record coupled with a .917 save percentage, 2.09 goals-against average, and six shutouts.
Per PuckPedia, the 21-year-old Swedish native becomes one of five goaltenders under contract with the Oilers next season alongside starter Stuart Skinner, backup netminder Calvin Pickard, as well as Connor Ungar, currently competing with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, and Nathaniel Day of the Flint Firebirds. The Oilers also have pending restricted free agent Olivier Rodrigue as well as Collin Delia, who can become an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason.
Jonsson is also the fourth player to sign his entry-level agreement with the Oilers in recent weeks, joining Day, Ohio State Buckeyes defenseman Damien Carfagna, as well as German League forward Josh Samanski of the Straubing Tigers.
For the Oilers, on the season the club sits 46-28-5 and two points back of the Los Angeles Kings for second place in the Pacific Division. In the midst of a two-game winning streak, the Oilers will look to close out their regular-season schedule on a high note with three games remaining, coming Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets, Monday versus the Kings, and Wednesday against the divisional rival San Jose Sharks.
