As Frank Seravalli reports, the Edmonton Oilers have brought veteran forward Mike Hoffman to training camp on a player tryout agreement (PTO).

Seravalli says, “Edmonton looking for an extra body in camp with the injury to Carl Berglund in Penticton. They wanted to keep training camp numbers constant as projected – and in the meantime, Hoffman gets a look.”

The 34-year-old spent the 2023-24 season with the San Jose Sharks where he tallied 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 66 games.

Hoffman has bounced around quite a bit the last five seasons with stints with the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens.

Hoffman has six 20-plus-goal seasons in the NHL, his first being in 2014-15 when he racked up 27 goals in 79 games with Ottawa. He notched a career high of 36 goals during the 2018-19 season with Florida and the following year put up 29 goals, one shy of his second straight 30 goal campaign.

Throughout his NHL career, Hoffman has racked up 228 goals and 259 assists for 487 points in 745 games. He has added 20 points in 33 postseason contests.

The Kitchener, Ontario, native was originally selected in the 2009 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. Hoffman spent his junior hockey days with the Gatineau Olympiques, Drummondville Voltigeurs and Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He captured a QMJHL Championship in 2008-09 with Drummondville and the following season won the QMJHL Most Valuable Player and Most Sportsmanlike Awards.

Hoffman also won an American Hockey League (AHL) Calder Cup championship with the Binghamton Senators during the 2010-11 campaign.

Hoffman joins a list of new players to Edmonton which include Matthew Savoie, Vasili Podkolzin, Jeff Skinner, Viktor Arvidsson and Travis Dermott, whom was also invited on a PTO.

Oilers training camp is expected to get underway today and the will play their first preseason game will get underway on Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets.
