Trent Frederic is back on the sidelines.

Added from the Boston Bruins ahead of this year’s trade deadline, Frederic made his long-awaited debut with the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, his first contest with his new club following an 18-game absence due to an ankle injury.

However, Frederic’s start with the Oilers will be short-lived as he aggravated his ankle ailment Saturday against the Pacific Division rival Los Angeles Kings, in which he exited early into the third period and did not return in the eventual 3-0 road loss. In all, Frederic closed out his Oilers’ debut seeing only 7:10 of ice time in which he notched two shots and a minus-two rating.

The injury will keep Frederic out of the lineup Monday versus the Anaheim Ducks, reports Sportsnet’s Mark Spector.

On the season, the 27-year-old St. Louis, Mo., native has made 58 appearances in which he has tallied eight goals and seven assists for 15 points coupled with 44 penalty minutes and a minus-16 mark. With the Bruins last season, Frederic notched a career-high 40 points coming in 82 games.

Per PuckPedia, Frederic is in the final year of a two-year, $4.6-million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason.

Beyond Frederic, Spector also reported that Oilers netminder Olivier Rodrigue will make his first-ever NHL start on Monday. A 2018 second-round selection by the Oilers, Rodrigue made his NHL debut against the Seattle Kraken in late March, turning aside seven of eights shots after entering in relief of Calvin Pickard.

The 24-year-old native of Chicoutimi, Que., has spent part of the past five seasons with the AHL affiliated Bakersfield Condors. Through 40 appearances in 2024-25, Rodrigue has posted an 18-15-7 record coupled with an .899 save percentage, 3.05 goals-against average, and one shutout. In all, through 130 career contests with the Condors, Rodrigue is 61-51-17 with a .906 save percentage, 2.89 goals-against average, and a pair of shutouts.
