Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals among teams impacted by projected bonus overages

In an age where teams are consistently trying to crunch the salary cap, a couple of notable teams are facing problems thanks to projected performance bonuses.

The Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals have a number of players that are going to be hitting bonuses this season, some already have.

Capitals forward Max Pacioretty earned an extra $1 million simply by playing his 10th game of the season on Tuesday night. He will be making another $500,000 when he hits 15 games, and another half-million for when plays in his 20th game of the season.

The Oilers have a couple of players that are going to be putting their well over the cap. Connor Brown, who has a cap hit of $775,000, has was given a $3.225 million bonus, also for simply playing 10 games this season.

Corey Perry, who Edmonton officially signed on Monday, also has a base salary of $775K. However, if he plays 10 games, he will be awarded $225,000. He is also in line to earn an additional $50,000 if the Oilers win two rounds in the playoffs, and he plays half of the teams’ games in the second round, or 50% of the their contests over the first two rounds. Another 50-grand will be awarded to Perry if Edmonton makes it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and he plays the similar percentage of games.

The Oilers are projected to go over the cap by over $3.5 million, while the Capitals are expected to be over $1 million.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk break down what is going to happen moving forward.

Frank Seravalli: These projected overages…that would wipe out, or count against, any of the salary cap increase the NHL is projection, to go from $83.5 million, to $87.7 next season. These are significant factors to think about…heading into the Deadline, will it shape how they think about things?
