Fan dressed as Hurricanes’ Seth Jarvis joins team for Halloween Storm Surge

It’s not every day you get a chance to meet your hockey heroes. It’s also even more rare to meet them wearing familiar attire.

That was the case on Halloween in Raleigh when a young fan decided to show up to the Carolina Hurricanes matchup on Thursday with the Boston Bruins dressed up like Hurricanes center Seth Jarvis. However, he wasn’t wearing the Canes’ uniform. He copied a picture of Jarvis rocking an old Harvard alumni t-shirt in the locker room. The fan also taped on a fake mustache for a little more gusto.

The fan was featured on the television broadcast, as well as being spotted on the jumbotron at the Lenovo Center.

The Hurricanes would decimate the Bruins by a final score of 8-2, with Jarvis helping out with two assists in the one-sided affair. As Carolina was preparing for a Halloween-themed Storm Surge, the young fan was brought out onto the ice to celebrate with the team, creating a special moment between Jarvis and one of the “Caniacs.”

The story of the Harvard shirt came from when teammate Jack Drury, a product of the Crimson, brought the alumni t-shirt back from graduation, giving it to Jarvis as a gift. The Portland Winterhawk product cut off the sleeves and started wearing it under his gear, despite never having attended the prestigious Ivy League school. Jarvis has stated in interviews that people have asked him about going to Harvard.

Drury played two seasons at Harvard before signing with the Hurricanes, the team that took him in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft, in July 2021. After two seasons going up and down between the Canes and the American Hockey League, Drury became a full-time NHLer for the first time last season.

Drury is not the only Harvard connection the team in North Carolina has. Hurricanes’ television color commentator Tripp Tracy played four years for the Crimson before making the jump to the pro ranks. Though he was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, he joined the Hartford Whalers organization in 1996, staying in the franchise’s minor-league system the following year when the NHL club moved to Raleigh.

The Hurricanes (7-2-0) currently sit tied with the Washington Capitals for the second-best winning percentage in the Metropolitan Division. Carolina will host the Capitals on Sunday.
