Five NHL players placed on waivers for Sept. 21
As we creep closer to the start of the 2026-27 NHL season, a handful of players have hit the waiver wire.
On Monday, the Seattle Kraken placed forwards John Hayden, Logan Morrison, Jon-Randall Avon, and goaltender Victor Ostman on waivers. The Chicago Blackhawks also placed defenseman Derrick Pouliot on waivers.
All five players are now available to be claimed by any of the NHL’s 31 other teams.
The player with the most substantial NHL experience is probably Hayden. The 31-year-old veteran went scoreless in three games for Seattle last season, while notching 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points in 67 games for the Kraken’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Coachella Valley Firebirds. Over the course of his career, Hayden has played for five different NHL teams, compiling 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points in 272 total games.
Morrison, 24, had a strong showing for Coachella Valley last season, registering 29 goals and 32 assists for 61 points in 68 games. His only NHL experience came in the 2023-24 season, when he went scoreless in four games for Seattle.
Avon, 23, had 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 45 games for the Firebirds last season.
Ostman, 25, made one start for the Kraken last season, in which he allowed two goals on 35 shots in a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in mid-April. In 36 appearances for Coachella Valley, he posted a 17-15-3 record with a .906 save percentage and a 2.81 goals-against average.
Pouliot, 32, had two goals and 32 assists for 34 points in 68 AHL games last season, split between the New York Rangers‘ affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack and the Blackhawks’ affiliate Rockford IceHogs. He was selected eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, and has a totaled eight goals and 46 assists for 54 points in 226 NHL games over his career with seven different teams.
