Five-time Stanley Cup champion Donald Marshall dies at 92

Donald “Donnie” Marshall, the last surviving member of the Montreal Canadiens dynasty that won five consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1956 and 1960, died Thursday at the age of 92.

Making his NHL debut in 1951-52, Marshall joined the Canadiens full-time in 1954 and spent the next nine seasons with the club, scoring 114 goals and 140 assists for 254 points in 584 regular-season games. His best season points-wise with Montreal came in 1961-62, scoring 46 points (18 goals and 28 assists).

According to a press release from the Canadiens, Marshall mainly played on a line with Phil Goyette and Claude Provost.

Between 1956 and 1960, Marshall won five consecutive Stanley Cup titles on a team with Hall of Fame players like Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Henri Richard, Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey and Bernie Geoffrion.

Marshall joined the New York Rangers ahead of the 1963-64 season, where over the next seven seasons he would score 129 goals and 141 assists for 270 points in 479 regular-season games. He would be named an All-Star in 1966-67.

In the 2009 book 100 Ranger Greats, he was ranked No. 75 on the all-time greatest Rangers list through the franchise’s first 82 seasons.

“One of the most dependable and versatile players of his era, Don played seven seasons with the Blueshirts, serving as an alternate captain and assistant coach while playing with the team,” the Rangers said in a statement.

Marshall would spent his last two NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Through 19 NHL seasons, Marshall would record 265 goals and 324 assists for 589 points in 1,176 regular-season games. In 94 Stanley Cup Playoff games, he would score eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points.

Marshall was born on March 23, 1932 in Verdun, Que.
