Flames recall Devin Cooley on emergency basis; Dan Vladar day-to-day with lower-body injury
The Calgary Flames announced Friday that the club has recalled goaltender Devin Cooley on an emergency basis in response to Dan Vladar being sidelined day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
In 18 appearances this season with the minor-league Calgary Wranglers, Cooley leads all AHL goaltenders with 14 wins, a .942 save percentage, and 1.80 goals-against average.
A 27-year-old native of Los Gatos, Calif., Cooley made his NHL debut last season, seeing six contests with the San Jose Sharks in which he twice found the win column and put up an .870 save percentage with a 4.98 goals-against average.
A graduate of the NCAA’s Denver Pioneers, Cooley signed with the Nashville Predators in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. In all, Cooley’s time in the minor ranks counts 84 career contests in which he has posted a 46-27-6 record with a .909 save percentage and 2.87 goals-against average.
In July, Cooley signed with the Flames as an unrestricted free agent. He then cleared waivers in early October in order to be assigned to the Wranglers.
For Vladar, the 27-year-old Czech-born goaltender has seen 16 games with the Flames this season, coming up with a 6-6-4 record with an .885 save percentage and 3.08 goals-against average.
Acquired from the Boston Bruins in the 2021 offseason, Vladar has spent the past four seasons with the Flames. Through that time, he has seen 86 games and posted a 41-27-13 record. Per PuckPedia, Vladar carries a $2.2-million annual average value and can become an unrestricted free agent in July.
Standing 14-11-5 on the season, the Flames sit one point back of the Colorado Avalanche for the second wildcard position in the Western Conference. After falling 8-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Calgary will look to return to the win column Saturday versus the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
