A veteran with a scoring touch is on the move once again.

On Monday, the Calgary Flames signed forward Anthony Mantha to a one-year contract. Per Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli, the contract will have a $3.5 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season.

Mantha is taking a pay cut compared to his last contracts. The 6-foot-5 winger is coming off the final year of his five-year, $5.7 million AAV contract that he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in November 2020. Most of that deal saw Mantha spend time with the Washington Capitals, who Detroit traded him to at the traded to near the deadline in April 2021.

Unfortunately, injuries and overall lack of production led to Mantha falling out of favor in the U.S. capital. He was healthy for most of the 2023-24 season, scoring 20 goals and 34 points in 56 games with Washington. That effort led to the Caps sending him to the Vegas Golden Knights ahead of the trade deadline. The Longueuil, Quebec native’s numbers were okay following the deal, posting 10 points in 18 games. However, Mantha was only in the lineup in three of the Golden Knights’ seven games against the Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs. Vegas made it known they were not interested in re-signing Mantha after the season.

In total, the 2013 20th overall pick played in 74 regular-season games, scoring 23 goals and 21 points. His 44 points marks the first time since the 2018-19 season that Mantha scored 40 points in a single season.

In 494 career games, the former QMJHL scoring champion scored 142 goals and 154 assists, posting just six assists in 14 career playoff games.

With the signing, the Flames have 34 players under standard contracts for the 2024-25 season. According to CapFriendly, Calgary has over $24.7 million in projected cap space.
