Flyers’ Samuel Ersson day-to-day with lower-body injury
The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that goaltender Samuel Ersson is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Ersson sustained the injury during the Flyers’ 4-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. It’s unclear when Ersson suffered the injury during the game, but after playing the first two periods of the game, he did not return for the third period.
The Flyers provided more clarity on the injury on Wednesday, specifying that it was a lower-body injury, and that it was likely a short-term issue with him being evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Ersson also missed some time earlier in the season with a groin injury, so it’s possible that it could be a reaggravation of that injury.
Ersson stopped all 15 shots that he faced in the game, with Aleksei Kolosov replacing him in the third period and stopping all 7 shots to complete the joint shutout for the Flyers’ 4-0 win.
Ersson has had a tough year with the Flyers, as in 19 games he has a 9-6-2 record, an .884% save percentage, one shutout, and a -9.83 goals saved above expected, with the latter stat being the worst in the league. Despite that, he’s been leaned on as the starter for the Flyers this season, as he has the most games played out of the three goalies in their three-way tandem.
With the Flyers utilizing the three-goalie tandem at the moment, that means that they won’t need to make any roster adjustments in the wake of Ersson’s injury, as they will just dress Kolosov and Ivan Fedotov during his absence. Kolosov has a 4-7-1 record, an .872% SV% and a -7.07 GSAx in 14 games, while Fedotov has a 4-4-1 record, an .877% SV%, and a -4.06 GSAx.
The Flyers will look to build off of their win over the Sharks when they visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday at 10 p.m. EST. Philadelphia currently sits in sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 17-17-4 record, and are two points behind the Ottawa Senators for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, although the Senators have two games in hand.
