Former NHL goalie, broadcaster Greg Millen passes away

Former NHL goaltender and long-time NHL hockey analyst and broadcaster Greg Millen has passed away at 67 years old.

The NHL Alumni Association announced the news to the public on Monday evening. A native of Toronto, Millen played in 604 NHL games over 14 seasons from 1978 to 1992.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today,” the NHL Alumni Association said on X. “Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Greg’s family at this very difficult time.”

Throughout his career, Millen played with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Québec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1992 and turning to broadcasting, where he featured on the Ottawa Senators‘ broadcast in their inaugural season.

He finished with a record of 215-289-89 and a .873 save percentage in the NHL. Additionally, he played for Team Canada at the 1982 IIHF World Championship, where Canada won a bronze medal.

After debuting on the Senators broadcast, Millen went on to a lengthy career with CBC Sports and Sportsnet, serving as a color commentator on Hockey Night in Canada while going on to cover three Olympic Games and two World Cups of Hockey, in addition to twelve Stanley Cup finals and NHL All-Star games.

Throughout his broadcast career, he also brushed shoulders with some of the greats in hockey on radio and television, working alongside Bob Cole, Jim Hughson, and Harry Neale, among others.

“As both a player and broadcaster, Greg left an indelible mark on the sport as well as everyone who had the pleasure to know him, watch him, and listen to him,” Sportsnet PR said on X. “With his infectious passion for the game, sharp insights, and quick wit, Greg was a trusted and familiar voice in the homes of millions of Canadians for more than 30 years.”

Added Daily Faceoff’s Frank’s Serevalli: “Wow. Awful news. Greg was a true gentleman. Thinking of the Millen family and all of his friends.”
