Former NHLer Sven Andrighetto named IIHF’s 2025 Male Player of the Year

The IIHF announced Thursday that Swiss forward and former NHLer Sven Andrighetto has been named the 2024-25 IIHF Male Player of the Year.

Andrighetto received 34.6 percent of the votes, beating U.S. goaltender Jeremy Swayman (18.6 percent) and Czech forward David Pastrnak (18 percent).

Andrighetto led Switzerland to the gold-medal game at the 2025 World Championship, winning a silver medal. He also led the ZSC Zurich Lions to a championship in Switzerland’s National League, as well as Europe’s Champions Hockey League title.

In 45 Swiss league games last season, Andrighetto scored 20 goals and had 19 assists for 39 points in 45 games with Zurich SC. In six seasons in the National League, he has 90 goals and 96 assists for 186 points in 219 career regular-season games.

Drafted in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Andrighetto had 31 goals and 52 assists for 83 points in 216 regular-season games with the Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. He also appeared in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring one goal.

Before turning professional, Andrighetto played two seasons in the QMJHL with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, scoring 67 goals and 105 assists for 172 points, including a 2012-13 season where he scored 31 goals and 67 assists for 98 points. In 18 QMJHL playoff games, he scored eight goals and 24 assists for 32 points.

According to the IIHF press release, “The IIHF Male Player of the Year Award is given every year to a player who has best demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, team success, and sporting character on and off the ice during the most recent season.”
