What a moment last night for Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson as he became the 18th goalie in NHL history to score a goal.

Today on Daily Faceoff Live, hosts Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about why goalie goals are fun and how skilled goaltenders are in today’s NHL.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Around the league last night a great moment in Minnesota where Filip Gustavsson became just the 18th goalie to score a goal just the 11th to score a goal by actually shooting the puck into the net. The horn blew at the end of the second, he shot a puck into the other team’s net and the Gus Bus was alive and well.

Frank Seravalli: I love to see the reaction from Marc-Andre Fleury for one he told him to get ready to shoot. So he was part of the game plan. And beyond that, I love Gustavsson’s reaction saying, you know, “They got to bring me in part of the power play meetings.” Now, that was a power play goal, of course. There’s only been a couple of those now that have gone in and you see the list here is really short.

Frank Seravalli: What’s kind of amazing is, it’s not that they’ve become routine, but we’ve had now a couple in the last couple years, that’s three. What’s amazing about it is that we went so long from 2013 all the way until 2020 without any. So these guys are more skilled than ever at shooting the puck. Even Gustavsson admitted, “I didn’t know that I could get the puck that high up in the air to get it over guys.” Sometimes everything comes together not often you see it and love to celebrate it because these guys are also a huge part of team defense whether it’s stopping the puck behind the net moving the puck to get it where it’s going or in this case getting it to the other end of the ice.
