Goalies to keep an eye on as teams look to trade market
Frank Seravalli and Mike McKenna talk about which goalies will be the most sought-after on the trade market this summer as teams look to upgrade between the pipes.
Frank Seravalli: Who is the most attractive number two you’d want to go after in the summer? Is it Vladar, or is it Swayman? Who would be the guy you’d want to target if you could
Mike McKenna: It depends on the team, I think. I’ve said before I think Pittsburgh would be a great place for Vladar, I like his upside. If you want a guarantee, though, why not target a goalie coming down from a number-one status?
Frank Seravalli: Like a Marc-Andre Fleury?
Mike McKenna: Oh, there’s a name to slide out there. How about a Cam Talbot? Is Talbot a number one in the league anymore?
Frank Seravalli: Well, depending on what the Senators do, what about Anton Forsberg
Mike McKenna: Forsberg would be a great target to get. I think he’s got a higher potential for it than that. For that number two range, I really like Vladar if you’re going for a trade.
Frank Seravalli: I like the annual game of goaltending musical chairs. It never ceases to amaze me; it’s fascinating to see which teams bet on who. By the way, I don’t know what the Hurricanes are doing; they might run it back, but like Freddie Andersen’s numbers haven’t been anything short of good. The thing is, is that just a product of the way the Canes play?
Mike McKenna: I think that’s part of it, even Antti Raanta; who’s going to take him on knowing he’s hurt a third of the season? One guy I would keep an eye on is Jake Allen. If Montreal decides to go after a goalie who can take that spot there, they don’t know what they have in Montembeault yet, Primeau doesn’t seem to be the guy; if they make a play, then keep an eye on where Allen ends up.
Frank Seravalli: Keep an eye on Seymon Varlamov as well, leaving the Islanders as a free agent. One team mentioned this to me as well the other day but Kaapo Kahkonen in San Jose. Not going to generate a bunch of buzzes, his numbers were sub .900 last season, but a couple of teams think he has the potential to be much better than he is, and he’s signed for one more year at a reasonable number.
