The Vegas Golden Knights have signed defenseman Shea Theodore to a seven-year contract with a $7.425 million cap hit. The signing and term were announced by the team, while the AAV and salary were confirmed by Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli.

Theodore was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the conclusion of his seven-year contract with a $5.2 million cap hit. There are currently no details regarding any no-move/no-trade clauses or signing bonuses with this contract. On a year-by-year basis, he’ll be paid $9.5, $9.5, $8.6, $7.275, $5.7, $5.7 and $5.7 million over the course of his contract.

Theodore receives a raise of just over $2.2 million per year, with his new contract having the highest AAV of his career. With this new contract, the Golden Knights lock him up until he’s 36 years old at 8.44% of the 2024-25 salary cap. With his new deal, he will have the 29th-highest cap hit among position next season. His closest cap hit comparables are Aaron Ekblad and Morgan Rielly at $7.5 million and Vince Dunn at $7.35 million.

Theodore is off to a hot start this season, as he has 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 6 games. That’s currently an 82-game pace of 95 points, which would easily blow away his previous career high of 52 set in 2021-22, but with how early it is in the season, that kind of production all season long is far from guaranteed.

Theodore was the 26th overall pick for the Anaheim Ducks in the 2013 NHL Draft, and after making his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season, he spent parts of two seasons with the Ducks before he was traded to the Golden Knights in return for Vegas taking Clayton Stoner in the expansion draft. Theodore has since spent the past eight seasons with the Golden Knights, winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 2023.

The Golden Knights currently find themselves in second place in the Pacific Division with a 4-2-1 record. They’ll look to build off of their 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night when they host the Ottawa Senators on Friday at 6 p.m.
