Hockey Hall of Fame crosses Brad Aldrich’s name out on Stanley Cup

Disgraced former Chicago Blackhawks’ video coach Brad Aldrich has had his name removed from the Stanley Cup, the Hockey Hall of Fame has confirmed.

The move comes a week after Blackhawks owner Rockey Wirtz asked the Hall to remove Aldrich’s name following an investigation into sexual assault allegations levied against him

“I am humbly requesting that the Hockey Hall of Fame consider “x-ing” out his name on the Stanley Cup,” Wirtz wrote in the letter. “While nothing can undo what he did, leaving his name on the most prestigious trophy in sports seems profoundly wrong. Taking a stand on the unforgivable behaviour of Aldrich should include erasing his name from the Cup.”

While other former Blackhawks executives in then-general manager Stan Bowman, top hockey executive Al MacIsaac and head coach Joel Quenneville all resigned from their roles, Aldrich’s name is the only one to be X’d out.

The Hockey Hall of Fame is unable to remove names outright from the Cup, instead opting to X out the name.

Only one other name has been stamped out on the Cup in Basil Pocklington, the father of former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington.
